Its usefulness
[
up]. At the beginning of the profession, the hypnotherapist has a limited experience and few clients. Thus, if (s)he works with clients, then there is a need of advices and support. This is the supervision. The beginners that think that they don't need it at all could be very skilled, or, more probably, too much irresponsible or self-important. Supervision is not mandatory, but the beginners without it are rather hindered.
How to do it
[
up]. The APHP (Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, UK) follows the simple rules cited here. Every LAPHP (APHP Licentiate, that is a member with less than two years of experience) must be supervised, otherwise after four years (s)he will be degraded to the non professional status of AAPHP (APHP Affiliate). With supervision and at least two years of experience, the LAPHP can become regular member (MAPHP), but without further ongoing supervision the MAPHP remains MAPHP even when (s)he has reached an experience (five years) that is adequate to become accredited member, that is MAPHP (Acc.). Every LAPHP or MAPHP should receive a formal (written contract) and differential supervision (supervisors more expert than supervisees); MAPHP (Acc.) and FAPHP (fellow of the APHP) can receive peer supervision. In any case, the supervision is valid only if done in real time (phone, tele-conference are ok; email or fax are not acceptable). Full-time practitioners should get 10 hours per year of supervision, while part-time practitioners can get 5 hours per year. In group supervision the only acceptable method is face to face, and the hours must be dilated by a factor of 1.5 (2 persons), 2.0 (3-6 persons), or 2.5 (7-9 persons). In other words, for the collection of the 5 or 10 points of annual supervision we have that each hour of supervision equals 1 point (one person), 0.7 points (2 persons), 0.5 points (3-6 persons), and 0.4 points (7-9 persons). Costs are always referred to the clock hour. The group can have the maximum size of 9 heads. The fee should be a little more than that of a normal session (because the supervisor must write a report to the APHP), but in my case I ask a very little fee.
